Repair usually wins when the system is under roughly ten years old and one component has gone: a capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor, a thermostat. These are ordinary wear items on equipment that still has life in it, and replacing a whole system over one of them is expensive advice.
Replacement starts to make sense when the compressor or the evaporator coil fails, because those are the costly halves of the system and a repair on one often precedes a failure in the other. It also makes sense when the unit still runs on R-22, which has not been produced in the United States since 2020, so a recharge costs far more than it used to and gets worse each year. An oversized air conditioner sounds harmless. It is not, and in this climate it is the single most common reason a new system disappoints its owner.
Cooling and dehumidifying happen in the same process. Warm indoor air passes over a cold coil, moisture condenses out of it, and that water drains away. But it takes sustained run time for meaningful moisture to leave the air. An oversized unit hits the thermostat target quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to do the second half of the job. The result is a house that is cold and damp at once, with the clammy feeling people describe as needing the temperature lower and lower.

Correct sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation using your square footage, ceiling heights, insulation, window area and orientation, and how the duct is actually run. It takes longer than looking at the old nameplate, and it is the difference between a system that works and one you fight with.
